A knock on my door tore me out of my thoughts.

Turning toward it, I put the book I had been reading on my bed next to me. “Yes?”

The door opened, and Kalira entered the room. “Hi! The King sent me to—” She stopped dead in her tracks as she took in my room. Her eyes darted incredulously to the stars lighting the entire ceiling. Her mouth gaped open. “So it’s true …” she managed to say, her voice filled with awe.

I followed her gaze. “It’s amazing, isn’t it?”

She nodded, her eyes as bright as the starlight. Ever so slowly, her attention came back to me. “Our King put them there?”

I nodded, not managing to hide my shy, embarrassed smile. I could have kicked myself for my body’s reaction. Since when had any man had this effect upon me?

“Well, fuck me.” Kalira blew strands from her copper ponytail out of her face. She turned and assessed me. “How are you feeling?”

I looked down at my hands. How was I feeling? I couldn’t say. On the one hand, I felt incredibly touched by Thanatos’s care for me, but at the same time, I felt so unsure of the emotions his care brought up in me. Emotions I wasn’t ready to share with Kalira. After all, I had basically just met her, and I wasn’t sure I was ready to open up to her yet—or ever—so instead, I said, “A little bit unsure.”

Kalira’s back was turned to me as she searched the wardrobe for a new dress. “Where does it still hurt so I make sure not to touch you there?” she asked over her shoulder.

Confused, I stared at her. Hurt?

The attack. She meant the attack. “Oh.” I laughed nervously. “I’m fine, actually.”

She closed the door to the wardrobe, a deep-blue dress in her hands. “I’m glad to hear it. Let’s get ya clean.”

I shot her a side-glance when I scrambled out of bed. “You don’t have to help me bathe. I’m fine, really.” Even though Thanatos had basically ordered me not to bathe alone, I couldn’t help but shoot one last shot. It always made me uncomfortable to accept other people’s help. I made to grab the dress she had picked for me, but Kalira snatched it out of my reach.

“Nonsense. The King has ordered me to help you and so I will. The last time I failed to obey him didn’t turn out so well after all.”

She was right, of course. I had never seen Thanatos as wrathful as he had been that night before.

I followed her petite form into the bathroom.

As the tub began filling with hot water, I watched Kalira move to the other side of the room. She grabbed a sponge and some soap out of a cabinet.

While she still had her back turned to me, I took off my clothing and slowly eased myself into the water. I exhaled contentedly. The heat and the smell of the lavender essence Kalira had added to the water already soothed my tense muscles.
